Daintree Village

Daintree Village

Perched high on the banks of the Daintree River and surrounded by the majestic Daintree National Park, you’ll find the quaint Daintree Village.

The Daintree Village is the beating heart of the area. It’s a quirky little town, originally a settlement created in the 1870s as a base for timber-cutters who came to log the red cedar which once flourished in the area. These days, the Village is an unspoilt oasis in the midst of some of the most unique and breathtaking scenery in Tropical North Queensland, and is a great jumping off point for many of the experiences you can have in the Daintree National Park and rainforest.

The laid-back, tranquil atmosphere of the Daintree Village pays homage to Australia's colourful past. Explore the string of storefronts in the style of yesteryear followed by freshly made scones with tropical fruit jams and locally-grown coffee and tea from a local Daintree Village hotel. Book your tours and cruises at the tourist office. Indulge at one of the restaurants or do a little shopping for artistic treasures at one of the artists’ studios. Spot the elusive saltwater crocodile or go bird watching on a Daintree River cruise. Catch your dinner at a barramundi farm or on a fishing tour, or admire the Daintree forest while relaxing in a luxury spa lodge or farmstyle B&B.

The mighty Daintree River flows past the Village and is home to many estuarine crocodiles which are frequently spotted from the safety of one of a number of wildlife-watching cruise-boats which leave from the Village jetty. Birds and butterflies abound - the Daintree Village region is a renowned birdwatcher's paradise and there are several specialist guides who will happily point out various Kingfisher species, Papuan Frogmouths or the Double-eyes Fig Parrot.

Daintree Village is also the entrance to the glorious Tranquillity Falls walking track, taking you up to your very own private waterfall and swimming hole. This walk is on private property so there is a small entry fee that can be purchased at the tourism information centre in the Daintree Village, and includes a map with directions. With many nature walks and bird-watching tours available, this little town is a great place to begin your Daintree adventure.

Step back in time in the quaint and picturesque Daintree Village. When planning your trip to the region, it’s important to know all the best spots to visit. Sign up to our newsletter here for all the up-to-date local information and holiday deals.
