Message from Executive Officer
Before we share the highlights of the last fortnight, I want to acknowledge the recent passing of Robbie Bastion - an industry legend and tireless champion for tourism in the tropical north. Robbie’s passion, dedication, and unstoppable drive inspired an entire industry and left an indelible mark on our region. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.

It has been an incredible few weeks in the Douglas region. Port Douglas Carnivale was an enormous success, with the town buzzing, the tropical weather delivering, and community spirit shining brightly. Occupancy figures showed a stronger lead-in than 2023 and 2024, reflecting increased pre-event engagement and longer visitor stays—a fantastic result for 2025.
We’ve had an incredible few weeks here in the Douglas region.
TPDD was proud to showcase the Carnivale atmosphere to over 110,000 followers through our destination social media channels. From reels to stories, the content reached global audiences, inspiring travel and reinforcing the unique appeal of our region. Hosting VIP famils, including House of Travel and Hot Events NZ, and welcoming Chinese and ITO delegations, amplified the impact of this iconic event. These partnerships are key to unlocking new demand, and with Christchurch now connected year-round via Jetstar, the opportunities ahead are even greater.
We’re thrilled to announce Douglas Shire Council’s renewal of its $1.5 million, three-year funding agreement with TPDD. This vital support empowers us to continue delivering destination marketing and tourism development initiatives to keep the Douglas region top of mind for travellers worldwide. A huge thank you to the Council for this commitment to our region’s success.
In advocacy news, TPDD has reached out to The Hon. Minister Mickelberg regarding the anticipated night closures of the Captain Cook Highway. The letter outlines significant concerns raised by the tourism industry and highlights the potential impact on the region’s economic recovery. We have requested adjustments to the closure schedule to minimise disruptions, ensuring the highway remains accessible to visitors while supporting local operators. We're also making important progress pursuing support together with Douglas Shire Council and key advocates for the Port Douglas Waterfront South Precinct Project.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to welcome the Boards and Executive teams from TEQ and TTNQ to Port Douglas later this month. This visit is an incredible opportunity for local operators to connect directly with key tourism leaders and discuss opportunities for the region.
This weekend, the Tour de Cure Signature Tour arrives in Port Douglas, with 190 riders completing their 1,000km journey from Airlie Beach. Tune in to Channel 7’s Sunrise on Friday. During this broadcast, we’ll proudly debut a co-operative Sunrise TV advert featuring Quicksilver Cruises, Mossman Gorge, and Back Country Bliss Adventures—an incredible showcase of our region to a national audience in advance of the Tour arriving into region on Friday afternoon. Channel Seven's Sports Reporter, Mark Beretta will film live from Port Douglas on Saturday morning for Sunrise.
Finally, membership renewals have commenced, and we’re delighted to welcome four new platinum members, along with new additions to our retail and service categories. Membership momentum is critical in driving targeted destination marketing, and we thank you for your ongoing support. Please help us spread the word to ensure we can continue amplifying the Douglas region’s profile.
Thank you for your continued engagement and investment in the success of our region. Together, we’re showcasing the beauty and hospitality that make the Douglas Shire such a cherished destination.
