Sunset & Stargazing Adventure Cruise by Blue Dive Port Douglas

Why are there no stars in the city? Well, there are of course, but you just can’t see them because of all the light around. But come out on a usually clear tropical evening and it’s a totally different experience.

Our adventure cruises are designed to do something no other Port Douglas tour has offered before, we take you on a journey in time and place in a magical and mystical environment.

At sunset, we cruise out of Port Douglas to view the rainforest-clad Great Dividing Range – we can even see the Daintree Rainforest and Mossman Gorge in the distance and, at sunset, it’s simply magnificent.
Your guide will tell you the boom and bust history of Port Douglas, the Goldrush, the sugar, the cyclones, the myths, the characters, the reality – Yet we take you back further in the story, to the fascinating way of life of the First Australians, the Kuku Yalanji.
As the sun sets we travel way up the mangrove-lined tidal inlet, this is the reef nursery as seen in Finding Nemo. Juvenile fish are born here and then travel out to the reef. Make use of the paid bar and free nibbles to kick back and enjoy this wilderness experience. While you’re relaxing on the top deck or in the airconditioned cabin below, your guide will share fascinating facts and stories about the local environment, wildlife and indigenous history of the area.
Tropical Wildlife:
Remember we are now in croc country…we might even spot one if very lucky! With special wildlife spotting red-beamed torches, we scan the waterways and mangroves, who knows what we will spot? Perhaps the reflected red eyes of a saltwater crocodile, the world’s largest reptilian predator – but from the safety of a luxurious, covered jet- propulsion vessel.
Laser time!
Now it’s night time in the tropics – most of the time that means warm clear nights and wow do the stars shine bright. Our northern hemisphere guests won’t recognize much down here of course. The Southern Star shines brightest – for Australia. Its constellation, the Southern Cross, is used as a symbol on the Australian flag. We use licenced military grade, green lasers to point out celestial wonders. We might even be able to point you out a satellite – and tell you what it does, using a special space app!
The beautiful star-studded sky is a time machine, the moon’s light takes 1.3 seconds to get to earth, and light from the sun, our nearest star, takes over 8 minutes to reach us. So we point out some very distant stars which may have died centuries ago?
Many of us live at a fast pace in a city dominated world. Well not here! Once the sun has set, our skipper turns all the lights off and we ask for silence for a few minutes. It takes a while for your eyes to adjust. We remember where we came from…Enjoy this very peaceful experience!
This sunset cruise project is an exciting new collaboration between Choo Choo Explorer and Blue Dive Port Douglas.
