Message from Executive Officer
We’ve had a busy and productive few weeks in the Douglas region, with strong collaboration across the industry and exciting developments on the horizon.
We’re looking forward to welcoming the Boards and Executive teams from Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) and Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) to Port Douglas and the Daintree later this month. This visit is a significant milestone and a valuable opportunity to connect with key tourism leaders. It will also mark the first visit from Craig Davidson, the new CEO of TEQ, and we’re thrilled to have the chance to showcase our incredible region and strengthen strategic partnerships.
In market news, we’re in the early stages of planning an exciting awareness campaign across the South Island of New Zealand to support the launch of Jetstar’s new Christchurch–Cairns service. This direct connection opens up fantastic new opportunities for the Douglas region, and we’ll share more details as the campaign develops.
Our 2025–26 Marketing Plan is nearing completion and includes targeted activity to support the crucial September–December shoulder season, with a strong focus on re-engaging our key Victorian market. As visitation patterns continue to evolve, reconnecting with this high-value audience remains a top priority. Further details will be shared shortly, including opportunities for member participation and contributions.
As part of our ongoing focus on destination storytelling, we’ve completed two days of filming in Port Douglas and are scheduling further shoots across the Daintree, Cape Tribulation, and the Reef. In an era where travel decisions are often driven by social media, maintaining a steady flow of fresh, high-quality content is essential to keep our destination top of mind and competitive in a visually driven market.
A warm welcome to our six new platinum members, your support and feedback mean a great deal. Membership growth drives our marketing efforts, and we’re grateful for your continued confidence in the direction we’re heading.
TPDD has actively engaged with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) regarding the ongoing Captain Cook Highway repairs, and it’s encouraging to see positive outcomes. We’re pleased to report that TMR has confirmed there will be no scheduled night closures on the highway for the remainder of June and throughout July 2025. We remain committed to advocating for practical solutions that support accessibility and the sustainable growth of our visitor economy.
We also continue to work closely with Douglas Shire Council to advocate for the development of a Marine Tourism Precinct. This catalytic project will support our marine-based operators, enhance essential infrastructure, and drive long-term economic diversification through the growth of a local marine industry. It will play a key role in strengthening the visitor experience tied to reef and coastal access.
We look forward to sharing details of our upcoming shoulder season campaign activity shortly.
Thank you for your continued partnership and engagement. Together, we’re building on a strong foundation and positioning the Douglas region for long-term success.
Emma
