GRAN FONDO GBR 2022 778 scaled

EO Update, 16 Sept 25

Executive Officer Message

Another busy fortnight for TPDD, with a lot happening both at home and abroad. I am currently travelling to represent Port Douglas and the Daintree at two key international events: Australia Marketplace North America (15–17 September) and Queensland Is Calling UK & Europe (22–25 September). These forums are an important opportunity to strengthen trade partnerships, expand our reach in priority markets, and showcase the incredible experiences our region has to offer.

Back home, Port Douglas was alive with activity over the weekend as three signature events brought energy, visitors and exposure to the destination. From the creativity celebrated at the Reel Futures Youth Film Festival, to the inaugural Run Port Douglas on Four Mile Beach, and the final edition of the Gran Fondo Festival, these events generated strong visitation, extended stays and valuable spend across the region.

I also met with TTNQ’s newly appointed domestic PR agency, Dentsu Creative PR. Account Director Micayla Pretorius spent time in the region connecting with members and experiencing the destination first-hand, laying the foundation for exciting new opportunities to raise the profile of Tropical North Queensland in domestic markets.

Looking ahead, planning is underway for TPDD’s multi-layered summer campaign, which will focus on building awareness, driving consideration and converting bookings during the quieter season. We are working closely with TTNQ to secure funding support and will soon be reaching out to operators with opportunities to buy in, offering strong visibility across targeted media channels and delivering solid ROI.

Importantly, the Queensland Government has launched the $80 million Tourism Icons Investment Fund, offering up to $5 million in matched funding to deliver world-class tourism infrastructure and experiences. TPDD is working with state and regional stakeholders, including TEQ, TTNQ, DSC and all levels of government, to outline priorities and support the right developments. We encourage operators with projects that fit the criteria and align with our destination’s strategic direction to reach out, as this is an exciting opportunity to think big about future product development.

The Regional Destination IQ Forum 2025 is finally happening this week on 18 September at Oaks Port Douglas Resort. This gathering is not to be missed, bringing together industry leaders, operators and community to celebrate and strengthen First Nations tourism in North Queensland.

We’re also looking forward to the opening of the new Splash Park on 20 September, another exciting addition to the family-friendly offering in our region.

Our occupancy snapshot shows an encouraging uplift, with stronger direct bookings for the months ahead compared to last year. This is a positive sign as we move into spring, and TPDD will continue to monitor and share insights to support forward planning.

Thank you, as always, for your support and collaboration as we continue to showcase the best of Port Douglas and the Daintree.

Warm regards,
Emma
